Spotlight - Jingo

Composer Magen Miller asked Ravel Virtual Studios to perform and record her piece, Jingo. Jingo is an exciting and energetic piece with a fast, syncopated theme and an interesting name:

jin•go [jing-goh] noun, plural

  1. a person who professes his or her patriotism loudly and excessively, favoring vigilant preparedness for war and an aggressive foreign policy; bellicose chauvinist.
  2. English History: a Conservative supporter of Disraeli’s policy in the Near East during the period 1877–78.

After showcasing Ravel Virtual Studios’ recording of Jingo on her website, the piece was discovered by Dr. Robert J. Ambrose, Director of the Georgia State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Dr. Ambrose commissioned a new work from Miss Miller based on what he heard and the piece premiered live in September 2011.

Magen has been kind enough to allow us to offer the entirety of Jingo for your listening pleasure. Please enjoy!

About Magen Miller

Magen Miller, photo by Katrina LeshanMagen is currently the owner and founder of the Dallas Artists Guild in Dallas, Texas. She also teaches piano, violin, and songwriting classes at the Rockwall School of Music in Rockwall, Texas and with in-home music teachers in Dallas. She received her Bachelor of Music Composition from the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in May of 2010.

Magen began to study piano when she was 5 years old with Dottie Kingston. She started playing the violin when she was 7. She played piano and keyboard with her high school choir and jazz band at Garland High School in Garland, Texas. She also played violin with the greater Dallas Youth Orchestras as well as with the Garland High School Honors Orchestra.

Magen’s interest in composition began when she was about 11 years old. What started as free improvisation led to the crafting of solo piano compositions. Starting high school, Magen began to study both piano and composition with Priscilla Long, former student of Alfred Mouledous of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Her interests in both performing and composition grew and she was accepted into the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in 2005.
